Did you know that the average American uses 2,200 paper napkins every year? This is a huge issue in our environment because paper napkins require almost 25 gallons of water to be created and release 7.5 pounds of greenhouse gases. When we throw these paper napkins away, as they can only be used one time, we are doing even more of a disservice to our environment. Instead, there are two simple alternatives to the paper napkin waste issue. One way to create less waste is to compost your paper napkins. Composting is a great way of using our waste and/or food scraps to better the environment. If this is something that interests you, please explore more online to find out how you can effectively compost your paper napkins and other materials. If you do not have the time or ability to compost, there is another option: using cloth napkins. Unlike paper, cloth napkins make use of only 8.9 gallons of water and release around 2 gallons of greenhouse gases. Compared to the paper napkins, this is quite the improvement. Also, cloth napkins can simply be washed and used again, so it is less of an expense for you in the long run. Overall, next time you stop by the store to buy napkins, consider picking up some reusable, eco-friendly cloth ones.
