THE best of both worlds

Writing sustainable solutions helps people around the world to incorporate a more eco-friendly life. With writing documents, you help others gain knowledge while also gaining service hours. Writers and reviewers work together to create a more sustainable world for the future!

How it works

There are two positions that help publish sustainable documents: Content Writers are Content Editors.

Content Writers will receive 1 volunteer hour for every 200 words written in a verified document (read below for more information).

Content Editors will receive 1 volunteer hour for every 500 words proofread in a verified document (read below for more information).

Content Writers will create the sustainable alternative document(s) using the template below, filling out every piece of requested information.

Content Editors will check the validity of the documents by checking whether or not the sources are credible. Here are a list of credible sources:

- websites with a suffix such as .org .gov .net .edu .mil

- credible authors pertaining to the specific topic (ex. water conservation research published by a materials science professor is most likely a credible source)

- credible institutions or organizations (ex. The Ohio State University and the American Heart Association)

Tips for finding credible sources:

- use recently published articles/ sources. Some categories such as technology or medicine will most likely require a more recent publication date.

If a Content Editor is unsure about verifying a document, they will request 2 more credible sources from the Content Editor (stressing the importance of a verifiable suffix).

The Content Editor will also be checking for spelling errors, grammar errors, and any other error while proofreading the document(s).

When a Content Editor has validated the document, they will send the document to one of the Edugreen members with this template email. The member will then organize it into the folders under the document's keyword/ phrases.

After the Content Editor contacts an Edugreen member with the document, the member will credit the Content Editor and Content Writer with the appropriate number of volunteer hours.

The Benefits of Switching from Plastic Grocery Bags to Reusable Totes

Approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used every year around the world. This poses a significant environmental issue due to the lack of biodegradability of the plastic bags (typically made of low density polyethylene or high density polyethylene). Individuals in the United States use an average of one plastic bag every day. Plastic bags are harmful to the environment due to their often fatal effects on marine life and many organisms. Fortunately, we can significantly reduce the harmful effects of plastic waste on our environment by switching the common use of plastic grocery bags to reusable totes. These totes can often be purchased at the physical grocery store near the checkout area, or online stores (like Amazon or Etsy). Moreover, these reusable totes are very affordable, often starting at $0.50 or $1 per tote. Not only are reusable tote bags affordable and helpful at reducing global plastic waste, but they are also more convenient when moving groceries items because of their stronger durability. This durability ensures zero spillage or holes when transporting groceries, while plastic bags can easily form holes. Reusable bags are easily portable; just store the lightweight bag in your vehicle and carry it into a store.
