The U.S. Department of the Interior reported that in the United States alone, Americans throw away at least 300 million pairs of shoes each year. Waste360 writes that "[t]hese shoes end up in landfills, where they can take 30 to 40 years to decompose" (Waste360). Shoes are often made of several different materials and are a difficult item to recycle. The company Allbirds "uses a medium proportion of eco-friendly materials including Tencel. It implements initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its manufacturing. Its use of eco-friendly materials limits the amount of chemicals and wastewater used in production" (Good On You). Allbirds offers a variety of shoes of which average around $100 per pair. By purchasing Allbirds shoes as an alternative to other non-sustainable brands, we can minimize shoe waste and recycle our shoes instead of sending them to the landfill.
